Jurupa Valley Checkpoint Yields 26 Citations, But No DUI Arrests | Temecula, Murrieta and Hemet DUI Attorney

Authorities issued 26 citations at a checkpoint in Jurupa Valley last month.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department set up the sobriety checkpoint at the intersection of 34th Street and Rubidoux Boulevard. It ran from 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21 until 3 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22.

Fifteen of those citations went to unlicensed drivers. Four went to people who were driving even though their licenses were suspended, and seven we issued for "miscellaneous vehicle code violations."

You will notice that not a single one of those citations was given for a DUI. That underscores one of the chief criticisms of sobriety checkpoints -- they're a waste of resources. It takes many law enforcement officers a lot of time and money to set them up, and measurable public safety benefit.

If you think about it, sobriety checkpoints are also pretty intrusive. How many perfectly innocent people do you think were stopped and inconvenienced during this sobriety checkpoint? We're all in favor of public safety, but we need to think about what we're willing to do to get it. Maybe some measures just go too far or simply cost too much and don't yield worthwhile returns.
